Book parcels continue for looked after children

Looked-after children in Pembrokeshire are to continue to receive their own monthly book parcels until the end of the year, thanks to ‘The Letterbox Club'.

Each parcel contains English and Welsh reading books, stickers, writing materials, and number games. Parcels come in different colours according to age.

The project is run by Booktrust Wales and funding has been confirmed from the Welsh Government for 2011. The parcels are sent out by Pembrokeshire County Council.

The Letterbox Club is targeted at children in Years 3 and 5, with year 7 pupils being introduced to the project this year

Booktrust Wales spend time with famous authors choosing the books for the parcels and also writing letters for the children.

The books are chosen at an interest level and children are encouraged to read the books with their foster carers and share them in school. They also form the basis of a library for the children.

Research has shown that the parcels make the children feel special as well as increasing their interest in reading. They are a focal point for communication, discussion and sharing.

The project originated in The University of Leicester and has been running for the last two years in Wales.
